“Innovation in Unconventional Resource Development:

Data, Nano, Sensing, Trial and Error;

And Good Old Fashioned Hard Work”

 

Dr. Claudia J. Hackbarth is Vice President, Unconventional Technology and Shell Techworks at Shell International Exploration and Production Inc., Houston, Texas.  She leads Shell’s Research and Development program in shale gas and oil, fundamental water technologies, and Rock and Fluid science and she leads Shell TechWorks, an innovation hub located in Cambridge, Massachusetts near the campus of M.I.T.

 

Dr. Hackbarth has spent her entire 30-year career at Shell alternating between the technology R&D function and the exploration and production business.  Areas of inquiry or application have included both onshore and offshore petroleum extraction, oil shale exploration, shale gas and shale oil exploration and development, and novel technologies for both upstream and downstream use. Highlights of her expertise include leading Shell’s exploration for shale gas in the United States from 2007 to 2009 and China’s Sichuan Basin during 2010 to 2011.  In 2012, she returned to the Research and Development function to lead work on improved models, methods, and technologies for the unconventional resource business.  In 2016, Dr. Hackbarth took her current position over this and additional technology portfolios.

 

Dr. Hackbarth is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in Chemistry and Evironmental Sciences.  She also holds a Master’s and Ph.D degrees from Harvard University in the Geological Sciences.
